‘If you read a lot, nothing is as great as you’ve imagined. Venice is — Venice is better.’ – Fran Lebowitz

We both opened our eyes at the same time this morning.  I whispered to Sonja...  "Let's go to Venice today."  She smiled, rolled over and bemoaned, "let me sleep."

And so, our great Italian adventure begins.

I'm writing this while we're still at SeaTac airport awaiting our flight.  The stress of travel day was ever present today.  Sonja just about drove me crazy!  Packing, unpacking, checking it and repacking it.  And lord help me if I offered any suggestions to help.  I'd get that look of "shut up or I'm going to kill you."  Didn't have to tell me twice.

We got out of the house, headed to I-5 north and was just going to settle in for the hour drive when this awaited us:

Thank goodness it was on the other direction of I-5 but if you know Washington drivers...  everyone has to stop and look, take pictures and give their opinion of what happened.  I guess I should be used to it.  We can get a traffic jam of looky-lou's when there's a new hubcap on the side of the road.

But all will be good in 14 short hours when we step off that plane in Venice.  We've been planning this trip for many months and our anticipation and excitement is off the charts.  Even though Italy is overrun with tourists this summer, we're hopeful we can avoid the crowds for the most part and make this trip as personal as possible.  We arrive in Venice, tomorrow, at 4:30pm.  Not going to do anything but check into the hotel, grab some dinner and try to get some sleep.  I'd like to be up before dawn to get into the heart of the city before the masses descend.

In the meantime...

... Sonja has calmed down and is settling into travel mode.

We're in the new Amex Centurian lounge at SeaTac.  It just opened a couple of months ago and it's nicer than some of the other lounges here.  Good food, good drinks, nice music.  Good place to kill a couple of hours waiting for our flight (which has already been delayed once.... grrrrr).

About to take off.  I'll post again in a couple of days.
